Partial retirement

Overview

From 1 October 2023, members age 55 or older can take between 20% and 100% of all their pension benefits in one or two drawdown payments, without having to leave their current job.

How to apply for partial retirement

Below is a brief summary of the forms that need to be completed to apply for partial retirement.

Partial Retirement Supplementary form

PCSE will review the form to check it is fully completed, add the required information and send it to NHS Pensions along with your AW8 application. NHS Pensions will contact you when they have calculated your benefits.

Please note, if you are a salaried GP or a Partner, pension contributions will continue to be deducted from the practice after your partial retirement date. Your practice needs to complete a salary change form or revised estimate on PCSE Online to update your estimated income if required.

NHS Pensions are developing a Partial Retirement Calculator which will show you, and your employer, how taking different percentages of your pension at partial retirement affects the amount of pension benefits you'll get overall.
